Relations among Professional Experiences and Narcissism of Play Therapist, Child¡¯s Traits and Therapist¡¯s Perception of Child¡¯s Therapeutic Relationship

Abstract
This study was performed to identify the relations among professional experiences and narcissism of play therapist, child¡¯s traits and therapist¡¯s perception of child¡¯s therapeutic relationship. Data were collected from 186 play therapists who had more than three sessions with the child. The results were summarized as follows: First, the length of counseling career and number of case experiences were related to the child¡¯s perception of cooperative and positive emotional therapeutic relationship; however, the level of education related only to cooperative therapeutic relationship. Second, therapists perceived that older children showed higher cooperative relationship while younger ones showed more positive emotional relationship with therapists. Also children showed higher cooperative and positive emotional relationships when counseling proceeds to 41 or more sessions. Third, there was a negative relations between covert narcissism factors and positive emotional relationship. The higher goal-instability, over-sensitivity/vulnerability, and timidity/non-confidence play therapists had, the lower level of positive emotional relationships their child clients showed. Finally, child¡¯s cooperative relationships were explained with number of case experiences and child¡¯s age, and child¡¯s positive emotional relationships were explained with number of case experiences and timidity/non-confidence of narcissism.
